    Poppy the Penguin Review
Okay, confession time! I’m not a musician or even a teacher of music. I am a science teacher who is passionate about environmental education. When I heard Grumpy Sheep were putting together a musical on climate change I was delighted. Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) might come up with some of the solutions but the creative Arts are essential to communicate and spread the word of some of the serious issues we will all face in the future.
The setting for this story the Western Peninsula of the Antarctic where Poppy the Penguin, a climate denier, gets a reality wake-up call. Her musical journey covers why climate change is happening, what the effects will be and what we can all do about it. Pupils will be introduced to the animals and landscapes of the Antarctic through some fantastic song lyrics and wonderful narration. The songs such as Act Now, Leopard Seals and Blue Whales are catchy, toe-tapping sing-a-long tunes that will engage singers and audience alike. The production would have huge potential for an awesome stage show with stars, chorus, costumes, props and backdrops.
Climate change is not so scary if we know what to expect and actively change how we live – using a musical to raise awareness is inspired. I’d highly recommend Poppy the Penguin to encourage children, parents and the wider school community to make lifestyle changes to help protect our natural world and its many amazing creatures. It’s the perfect time to put the A for Arts for STEAM.
